I have a home I only use on weekends. which has a fairly modern heat pump. I have heard that I should keep the temp the same during the week when I am not there as on weekends as this would be more energy efficient since the emergency heat would not be needed. Up til now I have been dropping the temp to 55 degrees during the week and then bringing it up when I arrive on the weekend. I am located in the Carolinas where it does really cool off during the winter. Which do you think uses less energy?

It uses less energy when you turn the system down. The best way to do it is to replace your thermostat with a programmable unit. That way you can turn it way down during the week and have it automatically warm up before you arrive. It is an easy diy project and not expensive. For a step by step guide, check out the thermostat page at http://www.hvac-for-beginners.com
Turn it down, you are just throwing money away if you keep it up. The E heat should not run as long as it is warm enough outside. You can install a programmable thermostat to have it automatically bring the temp up to 72 a few hours before you arrive.
